The Voice: Anne-Marie admits she’s ‘worried’ for Tom Jones

The Sex Bomb singer’s extramarital affairs are almost as well known as his musical career. Sir Tom claimed to have slept with up to 250 women a year at the height of his fame. One of his most well-documented affairs was with the late US star Wilson.

The Supremes singer, who sadly passed away from heart problems earlier this month, at the age of 76, gave insight into their relationship.

Wilson admitted she was “starstruck” when she first saw Sir Tom perform live, after he was propelled to superstardom in the Sixties.

It’s Not Unusual was the singer’s first song to reach number one in the UK charts.

From there, Sir Tom and his backing band The Squires travelled to the US on tour.

It was there that the Welsh singer met Wilson and soon after they began an affair.

Sir Tom had been married to Melinda Rose Trenchard, known as Lady Linda, since they were 16 years old.

She stayed at home to raise their son Mark Woodward, the singer’s real last name, while her husband eagerly pursued fame.

Wilson explained: “The first time I saw him, I thought he was pretty phenomenal.

“I thought just like every other woman that he was just painfully sexy.”

Wilson claimed to have been “pretty young” when she first watched Sir Tom perform.

The singer was known for performing sexual hip thrusts on stage and for singling fans out from the crowd to serenade them.

Wilson said: “We were friends, you know what I mean?

“It wasn’t like a man and woman, it was like two stars hanging out and having fun.

“I just happened to be a woman and he happened to be a man.”

Sir Tom’s publicist, Chris Hutchins, claimed the pair were “very attracted to each other” during their near-two-year affair.

He explained that Wilson had flown to see Sir Tom in the UK and when Linda found out she raced down to Bournemouth in an attempt to catch him in the act.

In the 2002 documentary The Real Tom Jones, Mr Hutchins recalled Linda telling him she was “going to kill her” – referring to Wilson.

The publicist tipped-off Sir Tom that she was coming down and while he thought he had “removed all traces of her” – he forgot one thing.

Inside the oven was an “impressive” meal, which the singer claimed was made by Chris Ellis, his road manager.

Linda knew Mr Ellis “couldn’t even boil an egg” and “the game was up”, according to Mr Hutchins.

Sir Tom was forced to choose between Linda and Wilson.

The Supremes star claimed she was “in love” with the singer and recalled them breaking up.

Wilson said: “I was in love with Tom Jones, I will say that, I cannot not say that because it is very true.

“But you know after a while I realised that he was a married man and I needed not to be involved.

“That didn’t stop me from caring for him at all – but he broke up the relationship and it was good that that happened.”

She claimed to have been “devastated” for years after the break-up because he was “one of the loves of my life”.

Wilson claimed she would not have allowed Sir Tom to cheat on her if they had been together in a relationship.

She described Linda as “a really strong woman” to have “stayed married to him” for all those years.

Wilson said: “I wouldn’t have put up with it. If that would have been me I wouldn’t have put up with it.”

In a 1991 interview, Sir Tom admitted that he “never had a serious affair” and there was “no question” that he would ever leave Linda.

He said: “It’s out of the question, so whatever has happened has always been causal.

“The only real thing is my marriage and as long as we can both hold it together, as long as my wife can put up with me, I know I’ll be there.

“I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Sir Tom Jones is a judge on The Voice, which airs at 8.30pm Saturday on ITV.
