Ten Hag ‘is ready to become Man Utd manager after growing frustrated at Ajax’ and could have Rangnick in his dugout

ERIK TEN HAG is ready to become the new Manchester United manager, according to reports.

And he may keep Ralf Rangnick in the dugout in a shock twist.

According to the Mirror, the Ajax manager has grown frustrated with life at the Amsterdam giants with top players constantly sold.

The departure of Marc Overmars under a cloud after sending sexually explicit messages to female members of staff has not helped the situation.

And with plenty of support from within Old Trafford, the Dutchman appears open to making the summer switch and lead the Red Devils rebuild.

He said: “The lifespan of our team has always been short in recent years.

“I understood – and still understand – the sale of players.

“But you can hardly cope with such bloodletting if you want to continue to play a significant role in the Champions League.

“You need giant players for that – and Ajax can not buy that calibre of players.”

It appears to be a two-horse race at the moment with Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino the frontrunners.

But should it be Ten Hag, he will want to work closely with his board and senior staff.

And that could even see one or two sat alongside him on the bench.

John Murtough is the football director at United while Darren Fletcher holds the technical director role.

Rangnick, meanwhile, is set to move into a consultancy position at the club when his interim spell in charge of the team ends.

Former Bayern Munich II coach Ten Hag, 52, added: “Ideally, I wanted Marc on the bench. I don’t have to think twice about that.

“I started to believe in that construction when I was working in Germany.

I can only see the advantages of a sporting director close to you on the bench

“I love the German model. In Germany it is a common thing that sporting directors sit right next to you on the bench there.

“If you have a good sporting director, you know he takes a lot of the noise away around the manager – both internally and to the outside world.

“He will back you up and will also take away all the hassle with football agents.

“That way I can fully concentrate on the team and the development of the players.

“I can only see the advantages of a sporting director close to you on the bench.

“I want a sporting director who can be honest and straight.

“If something is not right, you know quickly and can be told to your face because you work with each other every day.”
