Morrisons has announced that it will no longer use plastic bags when delivering customers’ online deliveries and click and collect orders. The food retailer has already told customers of the change, which will be implemented from this week onwards.
Customers who do their weekly shop at Morrisons and get it delivered to their doors, are to this week expect their groceries to be packaged slightly differently.
Groceries will no longer be bagged in plastic, except for raw meat and fish due to health and safety requirements.
This is not the first time that the food retailer has banned plastic bags on home deliveries, as the same decision was made at the beginning of 2020 to limit plastic usage.
The decision was overturned when the coronavirus pandemic struck as Morrisons were forced to reintroduce plastic bags.
“Our delivery drivers will bring customers’ shopping in totes to their doorstep, with customers receiving extra time to unpack their shopping into their household,” the spokesperson added.
During the pandemic, the UK Government removed the 5p charge of plastic bags, but it has now been reintroduced to all supermarkets.
This decision to bring the charge back came after stores were criticised over plastic pollution.
To reduce the use of single-use plastic, many UK supermarkets, as well as other retailers, are doing their part to be more environmentally aware.
Just last week, homeware retailer Wilko announced that it would be introducing recycling points at 150 of its stores from April 1 for three months.
The company is the first high street chain to launch the recycling bins, which will be used by customers to recycle disposable face masks.
Due to the pandemic, there has been an increase in plastics such as PPE being discarded on the street and in other public spaces, therefore Wilko hopes that these bins will help British people to reduce litter.
Once collected in the bins, the masks are then taken to recycling specialist ReWorked to be turned into other products.
In other Morrisons news, the supermarket is reminding its customers about its rules and restrictions as lockdown laws in the UK are set to change tomorrow, March 29.
The retailer has encouraged shoppers to book their grocery delivery well in advance due to high demand.
It also has a next-day doorstep delivery service for customers who are self-isolating or unable to get to the store, and there is even a number that shielders in need of an emergency delivery can call.
Additionally, Morrisons is allowing customers with a basket to skip the queue, and three basket shoppers can enter for each one shopper with a trolley.
