The mega-bucks three-year deal will see him host the news at 5pm four days a week – and six hours a year of prime-time shows.

Dan can also boost his pay further by stepping in for Jeremy Vine, 56, when he goes on holiday from his morning talk show.

On Tuesday, the Strictly star told BBC Breakfast viewers: “I’ve never ever been motivated by money in any job that I’ve ever taken.”

Sources said he quit the Beeb, where he was reportedly on £300,000, after being refused an evening primetime show.

He was approached by Channel 5 last month when news anchor Sian Williams, 57, told bosses she would be stepping down.

At first, sources claim Dan wanted to continue working on BBC Breakfast in Manchester and travel down to London to front the news on its commercial rival.

He then used the Channel 5 offer as leverage with BBC bosses in a bid to secure a prime-time TV show.

A source said: “He’d made it pretty clear he wanted to front prime-time evening shows on the BBC for quite some time.

“He went to them to discuss his future after getting the offer from Channel 5 in the hope that they’d give him what he wanted to keep him on the breakfast show.

“But they refused and were left raging.”

The source added of his lucrative new deal: “The details have yet to be finalised but could include a quiz show or a programme in the style of Susan Calman’s Grand Days Out.”

Last night Channel 5 declined to comment.
