Dramatic footage has been released of a high speed boat chase between drug smugglers and Colombian navy officials who seized a huge £90million haul of cocaine.
The video issued by Armada de Colombia shows a navy speedboat pursuing a vessel before seizing the largest amount of the drug to be intercepted by the Colombian authorities so far this year.
In total, 3.3 tonnes of cocaine were taken after the pursuit off San Andres island, according to Armada de Colombia.
Colonel Carlos Urbano, Chief of Staff of the San Andres Command, said five men were detained, including three Colombians, a Venezuelan and Honduran.
Bundles of suspicious substances were found inside the boat and taken to San Andres Coast Guard Station, where it was confirmed the packages were full of cocaine.
Local authorities put the haul’s market value at £90m (US$113m) after it was seized on Tuesday (March 26).
Cocaine funds Colombia’s left-wing guerrillas and criminal gangs. It also fuels the South American country’s internal armed conflict.
That six decades long strife has left more than 450,000 people dead.
