'Spain loves British people' Madrid confident reopening looms as recovery 'looking good'

Spain’s Arancha González Laya has raises hopes for thousands of British holidaymakers by declaring the prospect of tourism reopening this summer is “looking good.” Ms Gonzalez Laya delivered the news but added that relaxing travel bans would require Spain, the EU and the UK to accelerate efforts. The official told the BBC how much the Government in Madrid was looking forward to welcoming back Brits.

Ms Laya told BBC Breakfast: “Let me tell you that Spain loves British people.

“So we are very much looking forward to welcoming them back in our country.”

The Foreign Minister also discusses efforts by the Spanish and UK Government to accelerate opening up international travel.

She said: “The important thing is that if we all accelerate our efforts now.

“If Spain accelerates vaccination if the EU accelerates getting the Uk out of the blacklist.

“And if the UK moves to consider regions as opposed to just simply considering countries for their green list.

“My sense is that then the summer would look good.

“Both for Britons and for Spaniards.”

Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps raised hopes that the travel status of Spain may change last week, with hopes the country will receive a green light.

Mr Shapps explained that the “traffic light” list will be under review every three weeks.

He said: “I regret that favourite summer destinations like France, Spain and Greece are not yet included but every three weeks from reopening we will be reviewing the countries to see how and where we can expand the green list.

“This is just a first step.”
