Officers had been attempting to stop a car when the high speed incident happened, leaving the cop with serious leg injuries.

Pictures of the wreckage show the police vehicle completely destroyed and almost unrecognisable after the crash.

The roof of the car was completely cut off from the body of the motor, with the officer lucky to escape with his life.

A red Seat Ibiza was also destroyed in the collision with the bonnet crumpled and the roof also removed.

An officer was rushed to hospital with serious leg injuries, but police have confirmed they are not in a life threatening condition.

The incident took place when two police cars attempted to stop the car as it headed along the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near West Cowick, Yorks, at 11.24pm on Friday, September 3.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and the road remained closed for a number of hours.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said today: “This is an update after a road traffic collision on Friday night as West Yorkshire Police Officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the M62 eastbound as it entered the Humberside area.

“During the incident the vehicle and two police vehicles were in collision and one of the police vehicles left the carriageway and struck a bridge stanchion.

“A police officer suffered serious leg injuries as a result.

“Four people from the non-police vehicle were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences and have since been released on bail.

“Another two people were arrested on suspicion of falsely reporting a car stolen. They have also been released on bail.”
