Shirley Ballas defends high scoring on Strictly after being accused of overmarking ‘favourites’

SHIRLEY Ballas has defended her high scoring on Strictly Come Dancing after being accused of overmarking her favourites.

The head judge has been very generous with certain celebrities so far in this series – but she insists it’s just because the “standard is higher”.

Fans were shocked this weekend after Shirley awarded Dan Walker a seven, despite him making a major mistake.

She also gave a nine to Rose Ayling-Ellis and a ten to John Whaite, which is very unusual so early on in the competition.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on today’s This Morning, Shirley said: “I believe I must score according to what I see,”

“If it deserves a 10, I am giving a 10, it might be a three next week or a two and people are like, ‘Oh the scores are all over the place.’

“But you have to mark what you see at that moment.”

Holly replied to her:  “Well you’ve had a bit of that this time because the past two weeks you’ve had the deciding vote as head judge so it’s come down to you, which obviously means Twitter and every other thing ignites and they either agree or disagree with you.”

Shirley explained: “The point is you have to vote. Many people I spoke to this week had not voted.

“If I send a man home, I’m a man hater, if I send a woman home, it’s because I’m ugly and old and I send a lovely young girl home. It’s nothing to do with that.”

Phil asked her: “So you get trolled?”

She replied: “Oh I get it all the time but at the end of the day, my job is to make exactly what I see at that moment and I do.

“I sleep at night and I do it with honesty.”
