Hours after three shootings at Atlanta-area massage parlors appeared to target Asian victims, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James posted a message on Twitter to offer his condolences to the victims and their families.
“My condolences goes out to the families of all the victims and the entire Asian community tonight on what transpired in Atlanta at the Aromatherapy Spa,” James wrote in a message posted early Wednesday morning. “Coward a** young man!! Just senseless and tragic!!”
Eight people, most of them women of Asian descent, were killed in the shootings Tuesday night.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Jay Baker said a 21-year-old man, Robert Aaron Long, of Woodstock, Georgia, was taken into custody in Crisp County on Tuesday night, about 150 miles south of Atlanta.
The killings came amid a recent wave of attacks against Asian Americans that coincided with the spread of the coronavirus across the United States.
James has been one of the loudest voices in sports to push for social justice and has also helped register voters.
