  • Berahino has struggled to replicate his early form for West Brom in recent years

Saido Berahino could be set to make a stunning return to English football with Sheffield Wednesday interested in the 28-year-old striker.

The Burundi international has not played for an English team since his departure from Stoke City at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Since then he has been playing his football in the Belgian Pro League for Zulte Waregem which included a loan spell at Charleroi last season.

Berahino though is now set to get another chance at English football, with Sheffield Wednesday looking to sign him on a free transfer.

The striker looked like a potential England star of the future after scoring 14 goals for West Brom during the 2014-15 season in the Premier League.

He even held talks with Tottenham though a deal could not be agreed with the Baggies on deadline day of the summer transfer window in 2015.

This led to the striker hitting out at the club’s then chairman Jeremy Peace tweeting: ‘Sad how I can’t exactly say how the club has treated me but I can officially say I will never play (for) Jeremy Peace.’

Berahino did go on to make another 40 appearances for the club before signing for Stoke in January 2017.

The former England youth international was unable to match his early form for West Brom before his departure from English football.

Sheffield Wednesday who sit second in League One after five games, are hoping to bolster their squad to boost their hopes of promotion back to the Championship.
