Russian train 'derailed by Ukrainian drone' as massive explosion lights up sky

Dramatic pictures have shown flames rising high into the sky after a freight train was derailed in a station in Russia’s Volgograd region, with state media blaming it on a “Ukraine drone strike”.

The blast happened at the Kotluban station just after midnight yesterday, Tass said.

A statement issued by Russian Railways explained: “Today, as a result of the interference of unauthorized persons in the operation of railway transport at the Kotluban station of the Volga Railway, cars in a freight train derailed.

“According to preliminary information, there were no injuries. Currently, train traffic in the area of Kotluban station is suspended and a delay in passenger trains is expected.”

The operational headquarters are working and the reasons for the incident are being determined.

Footage shared by Baza, a Telegram channel linked to Russia’s security services, showed freight wagons strewn alongside a railway line.

An accompanying post said: “The freight train derailed due to a drone attack.

“According to Baza, two wagons with fuel caught fire as a result of the drone attack. According to preliminary data, one tank exploded. After this, a fuel spill occurred and the grass caught fire.

“A total of nine train cars derailed. The fire has now been localised, but has not yet been completely extinguished.”

Kotluban is roughly 200 miles from the Ukrainian border.

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry claimed a fuel storage tank and a wagon caught fire with the fire quickly extinguished.

The incident is the latest in a spate of suspicious fires and derailments on Russia’s rail network, according to the anti-Putin, Ukraine-based Moscow Times.

Kyiv is yet to claimed responsibility, but Russian authorities have blamed similar incidents on Ukraine and its supporters in the past.
