Roy Keane winces as Man Utd icon makes new Premier League title prediction

The top three will not face one another again before the end of the season and Liverpool know that should they win their nine remaining league games, they will be crowned champions.

A 2-1 comeback win over Brighton on Sunday took the Reds top and they will hope to stretch that lead on Thursday when they host Sheffield United. Luton travel to Arsenal the previous day and Manchester City host Aston Villa.

But Keane, as a former Manchester United captain, spoke through gritted teeth as he was forced to admit that the Red Devils’ fierce rivals Liverpool are the likeliest team to win the league. After the goalless draw between Manchester City and Arsenal, Keane explained how the result benefitted Liverpool more than the two teams on the pitch.

“Liverpool are the real winners of today, obviously winning and watching these two teams draw,” he told Sky Sports. “Liverpool will be delighted. You’re looking at the table now and thinking Liverpool will be favourites for it, but with the amount of quality on the pitch that is why we’re disappointed.

“Arsenal, good team shape or whatever, clean sheet, but when you’re looking at the standards City have set themselves the last seven years – particularly (Kevin) De Bruyne and (Phil) Foden – when they don’t quite reach that level you’re disappointed. We take it for granted that these brilliant players will turn up, they’ve had an off day and will just have to take the point. I’m not sure it will be good enough at the end of the season for City.”

Later in the show, Keane repeated his claim that he would name Liverpool as his favourites to win the title, before then jokingly adding: “I think I need a drink” and taking a sip of his water.

Goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah against Brighton brought Liverpool back from a very early deficit thanks to Danny Welbeck’s strike. In a match with chances galore, the former Arsenal and United striker struck first with a stunning effort from the edge of the box.

Diaz then snuck in behind the Brighton defence and after a slice of fortune through a deflected pass, finished past Bart Verbruggen to level the scores.

Then Salah, with one of his record 12 shots on goal, received the ball from an outstanding Alexis Mac Allister and slotted the ball home to secure a vital three points, taking Liverpool top of the table and in pole position for the remainder of the title race.
