Rio Ferdinand calls on Man Utd owners to show their faces following fan protest

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on the Glazer family to answer questions from the Red Devils’ fanbase.

An anti-Glazer protest, in which supporters made their way onto the Old Trafford pitch, managed to get United’s game with Liverpool postponed on Sunday.

Fans have been unhappy with the Glazers almost ever since they took control of the club in 2005. However, that resentment has been heightened by United’s involvement in the scrapped plans for a European Super League three weeks ago.

Joel Glazer, who was unveiled as vice-chairman of the Super League, has since apologised to the club’s supporters.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed last week that he had also received an apology from the club’s owners.

However, Ferdinand does not believe that is enough.

“It shows you that 100 per cent, bearing in mind what they did a couple of weeks ago with the European Super League, it shows that they thought they were buying a franchise or something they could turn into a franchise.

“They don’t realise that they’ve bought a club that is steeped in history and a huge part of that is being a part of the community.

“The community is the bedrock of that football club and football clubs up and down the country.

“It’s a different culture and they need to understand.

“You want to see a face. You don’t want to see a generic PR-put-together quote that came out as an apology. That’s not good enough.

“The people that are part of this club and love football, they want to see a face. Put your face out there, speak, put yourself out to answer questions, immerse yourself into the club if you are what you say you are and love the club.

“That’s what they try to tell us, that they care about the fans, but there was no consideration about them before.”
