Latest figures showed that across the UK on Friday 504,493 people got their first dose, taking the total to 19,682,048. A further 32,773 received their second dose – 768,810 have now had both. In Wales one million doses have been given, meaning more than a third of adults have now received at least one dose.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted yesterday: “We’re accelerating the vaccine roll-out & I’m delighted that yesterday, the team administered 537,266 vaccines across the UK.

“The vaccine roll-out shows what we can achieve when we work together.”

There were also a further 7,434 cases and 290 deaths reported yesterday, down 17.5 percent and 32.3 percent in seven days.

However, police also issued compliance letters to motorists who travelled to Sandhaven Beach, in South Shields, as people across the country ignored appeals to stay at home yesterday.

Beaches and parks were busy as people basked in the sunshine.

The Met Police tweeted: “The sun has got his hat on this weekend! Whilst it can be tempting to head out and enjoy the weather, we all have a responsibility to follow Covid-19 guidelines.

“Please only leave your house if it is absolutely essential. Stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.”

Experts fear people will become complacent. Professor Susan Michie, of the Government’s Sage group of scientists, said: “The concern is that as the vaccination programme
rolls out and more people are getting vaccinated themselves and seeing other people in their community getting vaccinated, that people may drop their guard.”
