Ramadan is a time for reflection, contemplation and celebration. More than a billion Muslims around the world commemorate the holy month of Ramadan with fasting and prayer to devote themselves to their faith. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and it is considered to be the holiest month.

For Muslims, Ramadan is the time when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago.

During this special month, Muslims fast, pray and spend time with loved ones typically.

Fasting, also known as sawm, entails abstaining from eating, smoking, drinking and sexual activity during daylight hours.

Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, along with the others including Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity and performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
