Putin's 'deep-seated paranoia' blamed for deadly Moscow attack as victims rise to 115

The recent deadly attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow has left Russia reeling, with the death toll rising to a staggering 115.

Russian authorities have detained 11 individuals in connection to the heinous crime, which was carried out by gunmen.

The attack, which saw the concert hall engulfed in flames and its roof collapsed, has been met with swift action from Russian investigative agencies.

State media reports indicate that four of the detainees were directly involved in the attack, with suspicions pointing towards a link with Ukraine. However, conflicting reports have emerged, with the Islamic State group claiming responsibility for the brutal assault.

Dr Stepan Stepanenko, Director of Forward Strategy, has shed light on the alarming backdrop to this tragedy.

In a statement to Express.co.uk, Dr. Stepanenko highlighted Putin’s dismissive attitude towards prior warnings from multiple states about the impending attack.

He emphasised that Putin’s refusal to acknowledge these warnings and his tendency to attribute them to Western interference underscore a deep-seated paranoia within the Kremlin—a trait reminiscent of dark chapters in Russian history.

He said: “The fact that multiple states had provided prior warnings to Russia about the impending attack, which were summarily dismissed by Vladimir Putin as Western attempts to destabilise the country, is telling. Such dismissal is not merely a rejection of intelligence from former international partners but speaks volumes about the Kremlin’s current stance towards the West.

“In a rational scenario, warnings of this nature would foster international cooperation against common threats. Instead, they are construed as political manoeuvres, evidencing Putin’s deep-seated paranoia—a trait alarmingly reminiscent of Stalin’s era, where the shadow of perceived enemies led to devastating purges.

“Putin’s refusal to heed these warnings, and his portrayal of them as Western machinations, underscores a dangerous disconnect from global realities. This denialism is not just a political posture but reflects a broader narrative within Russian propaganda, which has long peddled the notion that terrorist organisations like al-Qaeda and ISIS are creations of the West. Such conspiracy theories, fervently broadcast across state-controlled media, are not just misinformation but serve to fortify the Kremlin’s siege mentality, portraying Russia as besieged by existential threats orchestrated by its adversaries.”

The narrative spun by Russian state media, hastily blaming Ukraine and peddling fabricated evidence, further underscores the dangerous disconnect from reality within the Russian propaganda machinery, Dr Stepanenko claims.

The flurry of misinformation and deflection tactics employed post-attack paints a grim picture of a regime prioritising political convenience over truth.

The attack, which occurred just days after Putin’s electoral victory, has sent shockwaves through the country, raising questions about security measures and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

With the Islamic State group claiming responsibility and conflicting reports circulating, the true motives behind this tragic event remain shrouded in uncertainty.
