“But unless the couple have been through previously, the formal process of adding the second party to the deeds and putting them on the mortgage, if there is one, then it’s more than likely that they would have no property rights at all.”

Monty added: “A lot of people think that’s the case, don’t they?”

The mortgage expert said that even when people take out a joint mortgage, “there’s a lot to think about”.
