Priti Patel demands urgent review after Sarah Everard vigil descended into chaos

The Home Secretary has asked Sir Thomas Winsor, Chief Inspector of Constabulary, to conduct a “lessons learned” review into the chaotic scenes in south London on Saturday evening. The Met Police has come under heavy criticism over the use of heavy-handed tactics in breaking up an outdoor vigil to honour the life of the 33-year-old.

Officers were seen grabbing several women and leading them away in handcuffs.

The Met later said four people were arrested for public order and coronavirus regulation breaches.

The disappearance of Sarah Everard, as she walked home on the evening of March 3, has provoked a huge outpouring of grief and dismay across the county.

Police had denied permission for a vigil to take at Clapham Common, near where Everard was last seen alive, citing coronavirus regulations.

However, hundreds of people gathered at the park to pay their respects to Everard throughout the day – including Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

This is a developing news story, more to follow.
