Princess Beatrice wears velvet hat and no tights for Prince Philip’s funeral

Princess Beatrice was seen arriving into the Queen’s residence in Berkshire today with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Princess Beatrice is the sister of Princess Eugenie and the daughter of Prince Andrew, the son of the Queen and Prince Philip.

Arriving at Windsor Castle with her husband, Princess Beatrice was spotted wearing a long collared black coat with gold brass buttons.

She matched the coat with black heels and a black velvet beret.

Although the length of the Princess’ coat and her hat follow traditional royal protocol for funerals, the fact that Beatrice was not wearing black tights is different to royal tradition.

Usually, female members of the royal family are expected to wear black tights if wearing a skirt to a funeral.

Zara Tindall, Princess Eugenie, and the Duchess of Cambridge have all also been seen today wearing long black coats for Prince Philip.

However, all are sporting black sheer tights underneath their outfits, unlike Princess Eugenie, who is not wearing tights, or is wearing sheer skin-coloured tights.

It was expected that female members of the Royal Family would follow dress code rules which have been said to be preferred by the Queen.

The rules include wearing longer skirts with black tights, as well as wearing a hat or a fascinator.

DON’T MISS

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the funeral’s attendees are also expected to wear black face masks.

Beatrice matches her coat and heels with a black velvet beret with a bow on one side.

The Princess has always been known for her unique fashion sense, and especially her penchant for hats.

The royal’s most memorable look was when she wore a sculptural Philip Treacy hat to Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011.

The hat later went on to raise over £130,000 for charity after being auctioned on eBay.

For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, the princess opted for a more understated look and wore a thin, headband-like teal hat by Stephen Jones and a matching teal dress by Roksanda Ilncic.

In 2002, Princess Beatrice and her sister, Eugenie, attended the funeral of the Queen Mother.

At the time, the sisters wore matching long black coats and broad, square black hats.

Beatrice is just one of 30 guests allowed to attend Prince Philip’s funeral due to current coronavirus restrictions.

The Queen and Prince Philip’s great-grandchildren are not in attendance, and neither is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, who is pregnant and has remained in the US following the advice of her doctor.

Following royal funeral protocol, all guests are wearing black, including those who would usually wear military uniforms.

It was announced this week that members of the Royal Family will not be wearing their military uniforms after “apparent difficulties in deciding who should be allowed to wear what”, Sky News reported.
