Princess Anne has ‘off-the-scale look of joy’ in first appearance since birth of grandson

Princess Anne, 70, was seen yesterday in photos posted on the Royal Family’s social media. It was the first time that the princess had stepped out since the arrival of her grandson, Lucas, on Sunday, March 21.

Mike Tindall, Zara’s husband, announced the birth of the royal pair’s son yesterday on his rugby podcast, The Good, The Bad and The Rugby.

Also yesterday, in the afternoon, Princess Anne paid a visit to waste and recycling workers in Cambridgeshire.

During the royal engagement, Anne was shown a new electric bin lorry and spoke to staff, thanking them for their tireless working since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Photos of Anne were posted on both the Royal Family’s Twitter and Instagram pages and the princess seemed delighted to have welcomed a grandson into the world last weekend.

Princess Anne seemed happy in the photos as she is smiling while chatting to the refuse loaders and bin lorry drivers.

Judi James, a body language expert, spoke to Express.co.uk about what the princess’ body language might mean in her professional opinion.

She said: “Although I’m sure Anne’s signals of fun here are partly-prompted by the conversations and jokes she is sharing with the key workers she is meeting, anyone who has studied the princess’ body language over the years will also take a guess that the almost-off-the-scale look of joy is also a result of the birth of her new grandchild.

“With her cheeks high and rounded, her eyes crinkled, her head tilted and her hands clapped in front of her torso plus a wide, beaming smile that becomes and open-mouthed laugh, Anne seems to be giving us a glimpse of her in doting granny mode,” Judi added.

The body language expert continued: “All the footage of her with Zara’s two daughters show signals of very deep affection and shared fun, so a new little brother can only bring new joy into Anne’s life.”

Lucas is Zara and Mike Tindall’s third child, a brother to the pair’s daughters Lena, two, and Mia, six, and Princess Anne’s first grandson.

Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, has two daughters with his wife Autumn, named Savannah and Isla.

Anne lives close to Zara on the Gatcombe Park Estate in Gloucestershire, and it was reported that they have been in a bubble together since Christmas.

For the royal engagement, Anne wore a long navy blue wool coat, a pale pink and grey scarf, and a gold and dark blue brooch on her left lapel.

The princess has been praised for her fashion choices in the past, with even Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful calling her style “timeless”.

The British Vogue editor told Vanity Fair in 2020: “Princess Anne is a true style icon and was all about sustainable fashion before the rest of us really knew what that meant.

“She is timeless in her style, and she wears a tailored suit better than anyone else I can think of.”
