Aston Villa manager Dean Smith wants Prince William’s trip to the club’s training complex to inspire the team to go on and beat second-placed Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday (KO 2.05pm). The Duke of Cambridge opened Villa’s new high performance centre earlier this week before addressing the team with a speech.

The royal is a huge Villa supporter and regularly attended matches prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

Villa boss Smith is hoping that the 38-year-old’s visit to the Midlands will inspire them to take all three points this weekend.

“It was really nice,” Smith said of meeting Prince William. “Our owners invested a lot in the facilities to take us to that next level and we were fortunate that Prince William the Duke of Cambridge came and opened our high performance centre.

“He wore the club colours on the day.

“We know he’s a Villa fan but speaking to him I didn’t know how much of a Villa fan he was.
