Prince Philip to receive funeral wish to be put 'in the back of a Land Rover'

The Duke reportedly once told the Queen to “stick me in the back of a Land Rover and drive me to Windsor” upon his death. In sticking to his wishes, a Land Rover will carry the Duke on a short procession around Windsor Castle before reaching St George’s Chapel for the service.

The Duke got behind the wheel of an L406 model to drive US President Barack Obama in 2016.

Prince Philip also escaped injury after a horrific accident behind the wheel of a Land Rover at the Sandringham estate in 2007.

He was then spotted driving a replacement Land Rover just two days after the accident.

However, the Duke voluntarily gave his driving licence to the DVLA a month later, retiring from driving.

Buckingham Place confirmed the Land Rover was part of the “original plans” for the funeral service.

It is believed without any coronavirus restrictions in place, the car would have been used to transport the coffin from London to Windsor.

This would have allowed members of the public to line the route to pay their last respects to the Duke.

Buckingham Palace said: “The Duke had a great interest in design so that is where the involvement of the Land Rover comes from.

“The Land Rover was very much part of the original plans as approved by the Duke.”

Land Rover posted a special tribute to the Duke on news of his death last Friday.

They said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and Royal Family.

“The Duke devoted his life to public service and made a significant contribution to UK manufacturing, engineering and design.”
