Pornhub blocks access to all users in Texas in response to age verification law

Pornhub is blocking access to their website for users in Texas in response to a new state law requiring age verification to ensure those viewing explicit content are 18 or older.

Texas law HB 1181, which was upheld in federal appeals court last week, ruled that websites containing a certain amount of “sexual material harmful to minors” must “use reasonable age verification methods,” according to court documents.

Pornhub’s parent company Aylo, which also operates the adult websites YouPorn and Brazzers, is now reportedly restricting access to all three sites for Texans — regardless of age. The company posted a statement on Pornhub’s homepage explaining its opposition to the law.

“Not only does this impinge on the rights of adults to access protected speech, it fails strict scrutiny by employing the least effective and yet also most restrictive means of accomplishing Texas’s stated purpose of allegedly protecting minors,” the homepage reads.

The site adds that a more effective option would be to verify the age of users on their devices prior to them accessing adult sites, and called the new law “dangerous” in that it would lead to minors attempting to access less-regulated sites than their own.

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who sued Aylo as part of an effort to get them to comply with the new law, responded to the company’s action in a post to X on Thursday night.

“PornHub has now disabled its website in Texas. Sites like Pornhub are on the run because Texas has a law that aims to prevent them from showing harmful, obscene material to children,” he wrote. “We recently secured a major victory against Pornhub and other sites that sought to block this law from taking effect. In Texas, companies cannot get away with showing porn to children. If they don’t want to comply, good riddance.”

With the new legislation, Texas joins several other states — including Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Utah and Virginia — which have all lost access to Pornhub in response to similar laws that require age verification.

After Utah passed its own law last May, Pornhub posted a comparable message to its site, writing, “The best and most effective solution for protecting children and adults alike is to identify users by their device and allow access to age-restricted materials and websites based on that identification.”
