North Yorkshire commissioner Philip Allott said Sarah Everard “never should have submitted” to arrest, adding: “Perhaps women need to just learn a bit about that legal process.”

Lucy Arnold, of Reclaim the Streets, hit back: “Does anyone really feel like they can stand up to a police officer?”

Mr Allott has apologised “wholeheartedly” since he spoke on BBC radio, tweeting: “I realise [I was] insensitive and wish to retract [the remarks] in full.”
