PIP, or Personal Independence Payments, offer financial aid to individuals to help with some of the added costs of life with a disability or health condition. The payment is tax-free and made available to individuals whether they are in work or not. However, before receiving the payment, and indeed sometimes at some point once the payment has been received, claimants will need to undergo an assessment process.

This is the case for a number of health-related benefits which many Britons will be aware of.

The assessments are usually undertaken to help ascertain what level of support a person is likely to require due to their health needs.

Now, the DWP has announced it will be resuming its trials of an integrated assessment process which includes PIP, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Universal Credit.

The original intention was to test whether it would be beneficial for those who would usually require a face-to-face assessment to offer a single assessment for PIP and Universal Credit.

The change could mean a single assessment to streamline the process of applying for support from the Government.

This year, Vicky Foxcroft, the MP for Lewisham and Deptford, questioned the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on where the integrated assessment service will be piloted.

The question was answered by Justin Tomlinson, who currently serves as the Minister for Disabled People.

Mr Tomlinson said: “We had started to test a single digital platform in a small number of assessment centres but this was paused due to the impact of COVID-19.

The specific site is currently undisclosed.

The approach, the Government has said, takes into consideration that claimants include some of the most vulnerable people in society.

As a result, it has been communicated the process of developing the new assessment service will be carefully developed.
