Phillip started his career at a very young age and began working for a local radio when he was in his teens.
When he was 17, Phillip took up the position of bookings clerk and tea boy for BBC Radio at Broadcasting House in London, where he was, at the time, the youngest employee.
Two years later he moved with his family to New Zealand where he made his television debut as the presenter of the youth music programme, Shazam!.
