Peace lilies will produce bigger blooms when fed five unusual household scraps

Peace lilies make excellent houseplants because they are easy to take care of, but need to be fed the right fertiliser in order to thrive.

To keep peace lilies blooming they need to be fed essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but you do not need to spend lots of money to keep plants healthy.

Chontelle Fossey, a houseplant expert from The Lily Pot, has shared that many of the nutrients peace lilies need to flower or prevent disease can come from kitchen scraps or other household waste.

She said: “If you’re anything like me, you’re likely always on the lookout for ways to keep your plants happy.

“So, I wanted to share some plant care hacks that shouldn’t cost you much, if anything, as you likely have these products in your home already.”

What to feed a peace lily to get it to bloom

Fish tank water

It may seem like a strange thing to feed your plants but fish tank water can contain dissolved nutrients from leftover fish food, fish waste and decaying plants which can make it extremely rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Chontelle said: “Fish tank water is rich in nitrogen and other nutrients that plants need to grow. Simply water your plants with the fish tank water once a month to give them a nutrient boost.”

Be sure to only use fish water from a tank that is cleaned regularly and does not have high salt, medications or chemicals in the water, as that could harm a peace lily rather than boost it.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon can be used to prevent fungal infections in the soil of peace lilies, one of the most common issues preventing this houseplant from flowering.

It is usually extremely beneficial to add cinnamon to a peace lily if you notice mould or mildew on it.

Chontelle said: “Did you know that cinnamon is a natural antifungal agent that can help prevent fungal growth in your plants?

“Sprinkle a small amount of cinnamon on the soil around your plants to prevent fungal diseases like root rot.”

Banana peel

Banana peels are highly rich in potassium, which is needed for flower production, and are fantastic to feed to a peaceful lily as they slowly release nutrients over time to keep the plant healthy.

Chontelle said: “Banana peels can also help to give your plants a boost as they hold several nutrients that benefit plants. They contain potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which are essential for plant growth.”

All you need to do to use banana peels is chop them into small pieces and bury them deep into the soil of your peace lily where they will break down over time.

Tea

If you are someone who enjoys a cup of tea in the morning, then you can feed it to peace lilies as it contains nitrogen and potassium which both support the leaves and blooms in a peace lily.

Chontelle said: “Tea contains tannic acid, which can also help prevent fungal growth, with the added bonus of boosting plant growth.”

To feed it to your peace lily, brew a weak tea (one bag with a couple of litres of water) and let it cool completely before using it to water the plant.

Chontelle added: “This is not a fertiliser that you can use exclusively on your plants, your plants will also need other nutrients, but it can help to give them a boost!”

Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds are excellent for peace lilies as they contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen as well as potassium and phosphorus which can improve plant fertility and also help maintain the pH balance of the soil as peace lilies prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil.

Chontelle said: “Coffee grounds are a great source of nitrogen, which is essential for plant growth. They also contain other nutrients, such as magnesium and potassium.

“To use coffee grounds, simply sprinkle them around the base of your plants or mix through your potting mix before repotting. Be sure to use them sparingly, as too much can make the soil too acidic.”
