Channel 5 this evening aired the third episode in its series 22 Kids and Counting which follows Britain’s biggest family, the Radfords. In this episode, parents Noel and Sue welcomed their sixth grandchild and shared an insight into the special gift they purchase for their grandchildren.

This includes around 16 pints of milk a day, as well as countless boxes of cereal and loaves of bread.

“We go through probably 16 pints of milk a day, two to three loaves of bread,” explained Sue.

“If we were having sausages for a meal we would probably have about 48 or 56 sausages.“We have got to get lots more than what any average family would need.

“I would say that we spent about £350 to £400 on shopping. It is massive, it’s never-ending.”

During the lockdown, the amount of food consumed by the family is said to have growth.

“Food bills have gone through the roof,” continued Sue.

“With lockdown and the kids being at home 24/7 they’ve eaten us out of house and home.“

According to Noel, they spend approximately £30,000 on other bills each month.

And when it comes to school uniforms, which often need replacing on a yearly basis, the family can spend as much as £400 in one go.

In order to support the family, Noel runs his own bakery which specialises in traditional pies.

“It’s about £30,000 just to keep the house going and feed everybody so it is a lot of pies you’ve got to sell to support us all,” he said.

“It is a huge responsibility, I guess, to have 22 kids.

“I try not to let it get to me but if you have a bad day or the shop has been quiet I do think, ‘what’s going on?’.”Worryingly for the family, this has been difficult after having to close the bakery’s doors during the lockdown.

“We went from earning a wage to absolutely nothing,” said Noel.

22 Kids and Counting is on Channel 5, Monday’s at 9:00pm.
