Pair of shootings in different Philadelphia neighborhoods leaves 2 dead

Two men were killed in two separate shootings in different Philadelphia area neighborhoods, police said.

The first incident unfolded in Brewerytown Tuesday night, the Philly Voice reported. Police were called around 9:45 p.m. to investigate reports of gunfire near 30th and Jefferson Streets. They did not find anything at the initial scene but were soon alerted to a potential victim just a couple blocks away.

When officers arrived at the 2900 block of West Oxford Street, they found a 40-year-old man suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the head. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was then rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:18 p.m.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said investigators also found three spent shell casings on the scene. He added that their proximity to the victim suggests he was shot at close range, CBS Philadelphia reported.

So far, no information about a suspect or suspects has been provided, but police said they are hoping to learn more through surveillance footage from the neighborhood A motive was also unclear as of Wednesday morning.

The second round of gunfire erupted at a home in Northern Philadelphia. Officers responded around 11:30 p.m. to the 900 block of Fanshawe Street, where they discovered a 26-year-old man in the living room by the front door with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died a short time later.

Small said the man, who was not identified, previously lived at the home with his family but had since moved. He added that a woman inside the residence at the time is cooperating with authorities and is being questioned in connection with the deadly violence.

The incidents mark the 57th and 58th homicides in Philadelphia in 2024, NBC Philadelphia reported. The figure is less — by about 30% — than the number of homicides recorded from around the same time last year.
