Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to get drawn into talk about Manchester United’s title chances and joked that he was ‘losing my job yesterday’ after their shock Champions League defeat midweek.

Solskjaer has always found himself under immense scrutiny since taking the United job on a full-time basis back in 2019, but the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho this summer has lofted expectations.

The United boss has been warned that he should be axed if he fails to deliver silverware this season and had his position questioned midweek when United suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss at Young Boys.

But the Red Devils bounced back with a dramatic 2-1 victory over West Ham to maintain their brilliant start in the Premier League.

The win, which was sealed by a late Jesse Lingard strike and an injury-time penalty save from David de Gea, saw United move into third place level on points with Liverpool and Chelsea.

Many expect United to make a real challenge for the title this season but Solskjaer is remaining level headed and reminded everyone that his future was being questioned only a few days ago.

‘You’re not going to get me on that one now,’ Solskjaer replied when asked about United’s title prospects.

‘It’s five games into the season. I was probably down and out and lost my job yesterday. That’s the way it is at Man United.

‘We deserved three points. It’s a hard place to come, here. Hopefully these points can make a difference. Let’s see [about the title] when we get towards April and May.’

Despite claiming three points in a tough match against a strong West Ham side, Solskjaer insisted there is still room for improvement.

He added: ‘We have to defend better. We have to make it harder to break us down.

‘For their goal the structure was wrong for whatever reason and we’ll have to work on it.’

United had to come from behind to win, having conceded the opener when Said Benrahma’s effort deflected in off Varane.

Ronaldo continued his scoring streak since returning to the club to equalise before Lingard netted a sublime individual goal with only minutes remaining.

West Ham had a last-gasp opportunity to steal a point when Luke Shaw was penalised for handling in the area, but de Gea finally broke his penalty hoodoo to deny Mark Noble from the spot and secure the win for United.
