Older drivers above the age of 70 have 'less choice' due to strict 'age limit' rule

Older drivers above the age of 70 may be unable to secure some car insurance agreements due to “age limits” on policies, according to motoring experts.

Connor Campbell from Independent Advisor Car Insurance claimed some firms do have age restrictions in place meaning those above some ages are unable to take advantage of certain deals.

Although older drivers will still be able to secure some sort of policy later in life, Connor confirmed elderly motorists will have “slightly less choice”.

He added that restrictions are likely to start impacting road users between 70 and 80 years old.

The news could be a major blow to motorists desperate to secure affordable policies with the cost of motoring on the up.

Connor said: “Legally, there is no maximum age limit for car insurance as long as you’re still fit and healthy enough to drive.

“So in your 70s and beyond, there will be a car insurance policy out there that will allow you to maintain your independence and stay on the road. You may have slightly less choice, however.

“While most car insurance providers don’t impose an age limit on their policies, some do. This will normally be between 70 and 80 years of age.”

It comes after a recent analysis from Compare the Market found that motorists aged 80 and over have experienced the steepest car insurance rises.

This demographic has seen a staggering 27 percent rise in premiums with some paying a whopping £600 more to stay on the road.

Analysis showed those between 65 and 79 years old had been hit with a 26 percent rise in costs year-on-year.

When asked if there was an age limit on car insurance policies, Compare the Market stressed this was often at the firms’ discretion.

They explained: “No, although some providers impose their own maximum age limit.

“As long as you’re medically fit to drive, you’ll be able to find car insurance with no upper age limit.”

DialDirect also confirmed some kind of age restriction may be in place but this can change between different firms.

They added: “Although there is not an official maximum age at which you cannot get insured, insurance providers will set their own age limits for which they are willing to offer car insurance.

“This limit will vary between insurance providers so make sure you check with your own individual insurance providers so that you can get covered.”
