Ohio Republicans vote in primary with U.S. Senate control at stake

Ohio Republicans were set to vote Tuesday in a crucial primary with big implications for control of the entire U.S. Senate.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, kicks off his 2024 re-election bid at the Columbus Firefighters Union Hall in downtown Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023. The three Republicans vying to take on Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown this fall in Ohio's competitive U.S. Senate race clashed bitterly in their first statewide debate Monday, Jan. 22,2 024, lobbing personal attacks and accusing each other of shifting political positions aimed at wooing GOP primary voters. Democrats are backing Moreno in the dogfight with state Sen. Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose mostly because polls show Brown with a better chance of fending off a challenge from the lesser known and more extreme candidate.

The Buckeye State is now lurching fast to the right in the age of Trump, making it a very tricky hold for Democrats up and down the ballot.

But Moreno is considered the weakest of the three GOP candidates in the race to unseat Brown, who is a familiar name after nearly two decades in office.
