Novak Djokovic's former coach Goran Ivanisevic eyeing new role as he lays out plan

Goran Ivanisevic says he wants to work with a younger tennis player after ending his remarkable five-year relationship with Novak Djokovic. Ivanisevic and Djokovic were one of tennis’s greatest ever player-coach partnerships, winning 12 Grand Slams since teaming up in 2018.

Djokovic announced his split from Ivanisevic last week, with the pair deciding that they have “exhausted” their working relationship. The World No 1, who has struggled for form this year, insists they will remain great friends.

Croatian coach Ivanisevic is now seeking his next role and will not be short of options given his success with Djokovic. The 52-year-old’s ‘ideal’ role would be helping a younger player reach the top of the sport.

“Actually yes. I would like to do that,” Ivanisevic told The Tennis Podcast when asked if a younger player was on his radar. “To work with a younger player starting out. Build something together. That would be ideal.”

In a separate interview with Tennis Majors, Ivanisevic admitted that he felt the end of his partnership with Djokovic was nearing the end during the American tournaments towards the end of last year.

“It wasn’t now in America, I mean, it never really occurred. I first noticed the feeling, if I’m being completely honest, last year in America,” he said

“I won’t say as far back as Wimbledon, but that Wimbledon, of course the player is always most affected, but as a coach that loss really hit hard. Of course, all congratulations to (Carlos) Alcaraz, at the end of the day he was the better player, but one or two points here and there it could have easily turned out different.

“We then went to America, and it goes without saying, [we had] an incredible run there – that finals match against [Carlos] Alcaraz in Cincinnati, winning the US Open. However, that’s when I really began to feel that the end was near.”
