Boris Johnson warns UK of coronavirus ‘third wave’

Under Boris Johnson’s roadmap, the next set of restrictions will be lifted on May 17 when indoor hospitality will be allowed in England. However, the former Brexit Party leader urged the Prime Minister to move quicker following the most recent data.

On Monday, he tweeted: “Just one Covid death in England today.

“Surely the time to unlock is here, people cannot live in fear forever.”

Britain’s coronavirus infection rate has fallen far below its January peak when over 50,000 new cases a day were being reported.

The UK has one of the world’s most successful vaccination programmes with nearly 50 percent of the entire population having received at least one jab.

Over 15 percent of the population have received the mandated two Covid vaccines.

Figures released by the Office for National of National Statistics revealed Covid deaths fell in every English region for the week ending April 9.

For the fifth week in a row, the number of people dying in total was below average for the time of year.

On Tuesday, Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed hospitality, non-essential shops and gyms will open again from Monday.

For the first time this year, non-essential travel with England, Wales and Northern Ireland will also be permitted.

Ms Sturgeon is hoping for another easing of lockdown restrictions on May 17, allowing small groups to meet indoors.

Mr Farage’s tweet received over 18,000 likes and 3,300 retweets on Twitter.

However, it sparked a mixed reaction from other social media users, with both praise and criticism for the leading Brexiteer.

One man replied: “Not often I agree with you Nigel but certainly do now.

“Government are trying their hardest – the scare tactics are all out.

“People are over it now – it’s done.”

Another added: “People will attack the man for this comment, because they have no other attack to make. Open up. It’s done.”

However, other Twitter users were more critical and accused Mr Farage of recklessness.

One posted: “If we lifted all restrictions now we’d go into another wave and lots more people will die.

“Do you get that but ignore it, or do you just not care?”

A second commented: “Unless you’ve been on the Moon, you may have noticed we have a plan, and we’re following it and it’s working.”

In total, Britain has recorded 127,000 coronavirus deaths, more than any other country in Europe.

Deaths are counted as Covid fatalities if they take place within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.
