Instead the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which will provide 80% of funds for the £300m deal, is seen as separate to the state

And BBC pundit Shearer posted: ‘Yesssssssss. We can dare to hope again.’

Last month Match of the Day presenter Shearer had bemoaned the lack of ‘hope’ and ‘ambition’ under Ashley following the 4-1 defeat at Manchester United.

He said: ‘I hate what my club is or has become. It’s been a long time now, it’s a hollow and an empty football club.

‘There’s no hope or ambition and I’m pretty sick of it to be honest. It’s copy-paste-repeat every season.’

But the mood changed after Amanda Staveley promised Newcastle fans that the club’s new investors are in it for the ‘long haul’ and have ‘big ambitions’ for the Magpies.

Former Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle striker Owen tweeted: ‘Such good news for everyone associated with @NUFC. New ownership is exactly what the club needed. Renewed optimism, it could be a game changer for the club.’

And Toon midfielder Isaac Hayden, 26, said: ‘Exciting times for the club and the city of Newcastle. Enjoy your cans #NUFC fans.’

Geordie TV presenters Ant and Dec posted: ‘Oh what a beautiful day.’

The takeover had been in doubt because of a piracy dispute between the Gulf state and its Premier League broadcast partner beIN Sports, but that was settled earlier this week, paving the way for the takeover to be completed.
