The man who opened fire on a pair of New Jersey police officers, one of whom was wounded, has been identified.
Vincent Correa died in the gunfire exchange with officers, who were also identified by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General on Wednesday as Derek Fiabane and Paul Piromalli
Fiabane and Piromalli were responding to reports of a domestic violence incident when the deadly shooting unfolded, police said. They were called the night of March 8, around 10:07 p.m., to a residence in Hamilton Township, where they were almost immediately met by 44-year-old Correa. Police said he started shooting at the officers with a rifle as soon as they arrived on the scene, prompting them to return fire.
Correa was fatally struck in the shootout.
“Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to Mr. Correa, who was pronounced deceased at the scene at 10:38 p.m.,” according to a press release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
A handgun and a rifle were recovered from the scene.
One of the officers was also struck several times during the shooting “and later transported to a hospital with non-fatal injuries,” the state attorney general said. He was released from the hospital just under a week later.
It’s not clear whether it was Fiabane or Piromalli who was wounded in the gunfire.
“Hamilton Police, Hamilton Police PBA 66, and Officer’s family would thank everyone who offered prayers and support,” the New Jersey State PBA wrote in a post celebrating his release from the hospital. “Miracles do come true!”
An investigation into the matter is ongoing and the attorney general said further information is being released at this time.
