NCIS LA season 12: Nell to quit Hetty role as she vents frustration to Callen in new promo

Hetty Lange (played by Linda Hunt) is still nowhere to be seen in the latest episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles. With Intelligence Analyst Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith) stepping in to head the team in her absence, a new promo for the thrilling CBS series has fans concerned that she may eventually decide to step down from the position.

Nell Jones has opened up to Agent G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) about the pressure of taking over from Hetty Lange in a brand new promo clip for NCIS: Los Angeles.

The popular NCIS spin-off returns with a new episode tonight after season 12 took a break from screens for almost a month.

In episode 15, ‘Imposter Syndrome’, the team are lured into a trap when advanced deep fake technology finds itself in the hands of dangerous terrorists.

Behind the scenes, Nell is still struggling to cope with her responsibilities as the team’s interim Operations Manager following the temporary departure of Hetty Lange.

With actress Linda Hunt staying away from set throughout the coronavirus pandemic, it’s still unknown where the show’s usual team leader is currently, and when she’ll return.

Meanwhile, Nell still isn’t sure if she’s up to the task if she’s eventually asked to take over from Hetty permanently.

The interim manager has already detailed her concerns with Field Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) in an emotional heart-to-heart during episode 12.

Now, the latest promotional clip has revealed a heartbreaking moment in which Nell makes a difficult confession.

As season 12 approaches its final episodes, Nell could decide to seek out someone else to step in, while she would be able to return to her less demanding job as an analyst.

Once the new clip was released online, some stricken fans took to the comments to speculate whether the interim Manager is still feeling up to the task.

One viewer said: “OMG!!! That last comment of Nell’s, where she’s questioning why Hetty left ‘HER’ in charge, and then her line of thought leads her to believe that Hetty simply had no other options to choose from.

“That is gonna cut Callen to the core. He’s gonna feel so much guilt for not stepping up to the task when Hetty needed him to.”

However, there’s still a strong chance Hetty will make a triumphant return, either near the end of season 12 or the start of season 13.

Hopefully, once the Operations Manager is back at the head of the table, she can give Nell some much needed words of encouragement.

Then again, it still hasn’t been confirmed whether Hetty’s exit from the role is permanent, so she may eventually return only to pass the baton over to Nell.

NCIS Los Angeles season 12 continues Sunday, May 2 on CBS.
