Everton’s season descended into chaos on Wednesday night as supporters argued with the director of football and one fan invaded the pitch to remonstrate with players following their Merseyside derby defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s side were without a Premier League win in seven matches before their clash with Liverpool at Goodison Park on Wednesday night, with the mood music surrounding their season having already shifted after a promising start.
However, a heavy 4-1 defeat – their sixth in seven outings – saw tensions among supporters finally boil over as they took their frustrations out on the players and the board.
Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands was involved in a heated argument with one fan
One video circulated on social media showed a fan directing his anger towards director of football Marcel Brands after full-time.
The supporter could be heard asking the Dutchman if he had recruited the players out on the pitch, asking ‘What do you think of that?’ and ‘Did you recruit them?’ before labelling the performance ‘absolutely s***’ and telling the 59-year-old to ‘Get out of our club’.
Brands responded to the man by asking: ‘Do you think it’s only the players?’
One Twitter user, claiming to be the supporter in the video, suggested Brands response brought the performance of Benitez as head coach into question.
‘Now I’ve calmed down surely calmed down surely that’s a dig at the manager and everything above them,’ wrote user @cok99999. ‘This club is rotten top to bottom. He is a yes man.’
There were also scenes of discord on the pitch, with one fan evading security at full-time to confront the players.

One disgruntled supporter made it onto the pitch to confront Anthony Gordon and other Everton players
The individual approached Anthony Gordon and Abdoulaye Doucoure, and was allowed to remonstrate with them, as security left the individual to complete his conversation.
Boos echoed around a half-empty Goodison Park at full-time, with many fans having long departed before the referee blew for the end of the game.
Fans had voiced their concerns during the match, with anger directed at chairman Bill Kenwright and a banner unfurled in the Gwaldys Street end reading ‘We demand Nil Satis Nisi Optimum [nothing but the best is good enough], it’s about time our club did too’.
Chants of ‘sack the board’ could also be heard coming from the home supporters, as they witnessed their side ship four goals at home for the second time already this season.
