Mum-of-two forced to quit job as she’s scared for deaf asthmatic daughter in mouldy council flat that stinks of urine

A MUM whose mouldy council house forced her to quit her job is terrified for her deaf and asthmatic daughter’s health.

Shannon Higgins, 25, moved into the property in Mapperley, Nottingham, with her daughter, son and pet Rottweiler last month.

But as soon as she started living there, she noticed the home was stinking of urine and riddled with damages.

The mum-of-two complained multiple times to housing association EMH Homes, which manages the property, but said her concerns fell on deaf ears.

Now Ms Higgins, whose daughter is deaf and suffers from asthma, is terrified for her kids’ health.

The mum has also quit her job to cope with the volume of repairs.

She told Nottingham Live: “I have quit my job because I can’t leave my house.

“It has so much that needs doing to it. These things have an affect on my daughter.

“It is a hell-hole. It’s unsafe for my children. They don’t want to repair anything.”

As well as the stench, Ms Higgins raised concerns about her hot water tap, which she said was pointing the wrong way and was broken.

She added the window seals were broken too, with damp around the house.

The mum added: “I have rang up EMH 21 times in five weeks asking for someone to get back to me.

“I never heard back.

“The cleaner even told my neighbour before I moved in that there is a really bad smell in the house. I have had the carpets laid and it absolutely stinks.”

Christine Ashton, executive director of housing at EMH Homes, said: “We are sorry to hear of Ms Higgins experience and sincerely apologise for not getting in touch with her sooner in relation to the issues raised with us.

“We have spoken to Ms Higgins and one of our surveyors has visited her home today to undertake an assessment of the repairs work reported.

“We will continue to work closely with Ms Higgins to get matters resolved.”
