According to the volcano expert, Etna released a pyroclastic flow of material down its flanks that extended about one kilometre in length.
In a follow-up tweet, he said: “#Etna, March 24, 2021. During the following two or three minutes, a huge black cloud rises from the pyroclastic flow, backlit by the lava fountains from the Southeast Crater.
“A hauntingly beautiful, and luckily totally harmless display. Views from home in Tremestieri Etneo.”
Earlier on Tuesday night, the volcanologist said Etna’s four-and-a-half days of peace and quiet were the longest to date.
