Merkel insists she will take AstraZeneca vaccine after Germany bans jab for under-60s

The German Chancellor announced on Tuesday that the AstraZeneca jab would be banned for under-60s following reports of blood clots of people who had received the vaccine. However, Ms Merkel, 66, instated she intends to take the vaccine as the German Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) now recommend the AstraZeneca jab only for women and men over 60.

She said: “I have said when it is my turn, I will get vaccinated, also with AstraZeneca.

“The possibility of me being vaccinated is nearing.”

Addressing the health concerns, the Stiko said in a statement: “On the basis of the currently available, but still limited, evidence and taking into account the current pandemic situation, the Stiko recommends using the Covid-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca for people over the age of 60.”

The commission pointed out that vaccination using AstraZeneca to anyone under the age of 60 remained at the “discretion” of doctors across the nation.

The news comes after a new poll found that jab hesitancy among major European countries has drastically surged following the restriction of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

YouGov contrasted two surveys in February and March which asked thousands of participants if they believe the AstraZeneca jab is unsafe.

France saw negative public opinion shoot up from 43 percent to 61 percent.

Germany, Italy and Spain also seeing the majority of their population distrusting the jab, while the UK only saw a slight increase from 43 percent to 61 percent.

The negative perception of the vaccine could be due to its recent suspension over blood clot fears.
