Mason Greenwood sent message by Man Utd as Sir Jim Ratcliffe decides on future

The 22-year-old has impressed on loan at Getafe this season after 18 months away from football, registering 10 goals and six assists.

Greenwood burst onto the scene from United’s academy in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.

But in January 2022, he was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all of which he denied.

The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in February last year due to “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material” that meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

Following a six-month internal investigation into a potential United return – conducted by the club’s former hierarchy – Greenwood left for Spain, reportedly due to backlash over initial plans for his reintegration.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has since inherited control of football operations after becoming co-owner earlier this year, forming a new-look sporting structure led by INEOS.

That, along with Greenwood’s form at Getafe, has sparked suggestions that Ratcliffe could give him a second chance at Old Trafford.

The 71-year-old insists he will make a fresh decision rather than agree with that of former chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough.

But Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund’s match-winning contributions against Newcastle proved that United’s exciting young talent box is already ticked on the right wing and upfront.

Alejandro Garnacho is also in the picture, having made the right flank his own this season. The Red Devils now need proven quality to compliment their high-potential prodigies.

To obtain that mould of player – say, for example, through a £60million deal for Michael Olise this summer – United will likely have to generate funds through player sales.

Greenwood is widely expected to be in the shop window amid reported interest from Spain, Italy and England. Jadon Sancho and Casemiro are among the high-profile names who join him.

United’s attack has largely underwhelmed throughout a disappointing season, and reinforcements are required before the 2024/25 campaign.

But green-lighting Greenwood’s return – and thus opening the door to the noise that would come with it – wouldn’t feel worth it if Amad, Hojlund and Garnacho’s trajectories continue to rise.
