Martin Lewis has revealed how a simple text message could help millions save a “shed load” of money on mobile phone bills. The money saving expert said as many as 14m people are out of contract with their mobile phone network which means they could switch to a cheaper deal without penalty.
Many are unaware they are in this position, so Mr Lewis said there is an easy way to find out if you are able to take advantage of the saving.
He said: “Why not text ‘info’ to 85075. It’s free and it will tell you whether you are one of 14m people in the UK who are currently out of contract and therefore free to switch – and can likely save a shed load.”
Mr Lewis said that most people who have had the same phone and tariff for two years are likely to be out of contract.
He decided to flag up the savings option against the background of big increases in tariffs which are due to come into effect in a few days.
“At the start of April prices on most mobile phone networks are going to rise eight percent even if you are mid-contract, which is absolutely outrageous, … so this is a really good opportunity to see if you can save,” he said.
Mr Lewis said the best tariffs are available through price comparison websites and gave the example of new SIM card deals offering 100 gig of data per month for less than £10.
“A lot of people are paying far more for less,” he said.
Mr Lewis said it is possible to use comparison websites such as moneysavingexpert.com to find the cheapest tariff on the network you are already using.
A post highlighting the benefits of switching on Martin’s account on X has already triggered responses from many people highlighting the savings they have made.
One follower posted: “Just changed from £37 a month to £12 for the exact same contract without the handset.
“That’s £600 saved in the next two years if my maths isn’t rubbish.”
Another wrote: “Just did mine and got reduced from £23 to £6 per month with extras.”
A third said: “Just done this and saved £50 a month.”
