Manchester United reluctant to join Erling Haaland transfer war for financial reasons

Manchester United are reluctant to join the race for Erling Haaland for financial reasons, according to reports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge admirer of the Borussia Dortmund star. But it seems like the Red Devils may have to look elsewhere when it comes to strengthening their squad in this summer’s transfer window.

Manchester United are big admirers of Haaland.

They wanted to land the Norway international back in the January transfer window of 2020 but, ultimately, missed out.

Haaland has since taken German football by storm with Dortmund and, this season alone, has plundered home 21 goals from 21 matches.

Yet while United would love to land Haaland, the Telegraph say noises are emerging from Old Trafford suggesting they’re worried about a bidding war, with their rivals all financially stable.

They’re therefore reportedly ‘reluctant’ to join a bidding war for the 20-year-old this summer, despite Solskjaer’s desire to snap him up.

Real Madrid’s priority is Kylian Mbappe but, should the 2018 World Cup winner stay at PSG, they’ll move for Haaland instead.

Manchester City view the Norwegian as the perfect replacement for Sergio Aguero, who is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium behind for a new challenge elsewhere.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has requested Haaland’s signing having seen the likes of Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner struggle for consistency this term.

And with that the case, United could be forced to look elsewhere.

They certainly require a new striker this season, with their current crop of forwards currently failing to sparkle in Solskjaer’s attack.

Edinson Cavani has scored seven times across all competitions this term but a parting of the ways looks likely, with Boca Juniors hot on his tail.

Anthony Martial has found the net just four times in the Premier League, looking a shadow of the player who bagged 23 goals across all competitions last season.

And Mason Greenwood has just a single Premier League goal to his name, too.

Meanwhile, speaking recently, former United star Rio Ferdinand urged his old side to break the bank for Haaland this summer.

“You know what, they’ve just got to go and give everything to get Haaland, I don’t care,” said the five-time Premier League winner.

“I don’t like to talk about players coming from other teams but this guy man, we can’t afford to let this guy go anywhere else.

“His only destination is England, that’s the only place he’s going. If he goes anywhere else I’d be so surprised.

“Born here, born and bred. He obviously loves English football, his dad played here. I’m sure it’s one of his dreams to come and play in England.

“Why not in the red shirt at Old Trafford? Be the guy that brings trophies back to Man United and brings the successful period back. Be that guy.”

Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, has claimed only 10 clubs on the planet have the financial might to land his client.

“It is obvious that everybody is looking at Erling as one of those potential new future stars because it’s so difficult to do what he does at his age at his level,” he said.

“He will be one of the future stars of the next decade because we see that stars such as Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo and Messi are coming to an age where everyone asks themselves: ‘How long can we still enjoy them?’.

“So everyone is looking for the new generation.

“Only a maximum of 10 clubs can afford to buy [Haaland] and give the platform you would like after you’ve been in Dortmund… and four of those clubs are in [England].

“I don’t think there’s a sports director or trainer in the world who would say ‘not interested’.

“It’s like saying: ‘Is there a Formula 1 team who would not be interested in having Lewis Hamilton?'”
