Manchester United have to react on Erling Haaland after worrying transfer development

Manchester United need to react fast if they’re to sign Erling Haaland. With Edinson Cavani looking likely to leave Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t afford to miss out on his compatriot. Not for a second time…

Manchester United could have signed Haaland in January 2020.

Solskjaer and Ed Woodward jetted out to Austria to seal an agreement for the striker, who was strutting his stuff at Red Bull Salzburg at the time.

In the end, however, United missed out.

They pulled out of a deal for the 20-year-old because of Mino Raiola, who they suspected would try and broker a move away for his client in a couple of year’s time.

Borussia Dortmund only signed Haaland because they agreed to a buyout clause in the player’s contract, meaning they’ll be powerless to stop their star forward from leaving the Westfalenstadion next summer.

“Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca. He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca.

“If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca. By the middle of the year he will return to South America.

“My son’s idea is not to continue there, he wants to return.”

And with Cavani now looking likely to leave United behind for a new challenge elsewhere, the Red Devils have to react.

Signing Haaland won’t be cheap. The Borussia Dortmund star is valued at £130million ahead of the summer transfer window, a fee that would make him one of the most-expensive signings of all time.

But with Cavani going, the Red Devils need to react. They have to sign Haaland this summer – and can’t afford for him to end up going elsewhere.

Real Madrid want the Norwegian but their preference, at the current moment in time, is Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel craves Haaland’s arrival but Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner mean the Blues are well-stocked in attack for the time being.

And Manchester City aren’t short on attacking options, despite their own desire to land the Dortmund star.

United, however, sorely need him.

Anthony Martial has misfired this season, with the France international finding the net just four times in the Premier League this term.

And Mason Greenwood has also struggled, with the England international bagging just one goal in the top flight.

It’s still too early for United to call up Charlie McNeill or Joe Hugill, with both players currently flourishing at academy level.

So United must now up the ante.

If Cavani leaves, Haaland is the only player who would be a sufficient replacement. If he goes elsewhere, their loss will be someone else’s gain.
