Manchester United have four Chelsea players to fear ahead of Premier League clash

0

Manchester United will enter their match against Chelsea on Sunday on a high after progressing through to the Europa League round of 16 in midweek. However, it won’t be easy for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. So Express Sport will now pick out the players that should concern the Red Devils ahead of the showdown at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud doesn’t always start for Chelsea.

But, when he does, the France international is often able to make a sensational impact.

Giroud was the matchwinner for the Blues in midweek, scoring the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid were beaten 1-0 in the Champions League.

And he’s been a nightmare for United in the past, finding the net against the Red Devils during his spells with both Chelsea and Arsenal.

Given United’s inability to defend set pieces, the 2018 World Cup winner will be hoping to get on the scoresheet again.

Marcos Alonso

Marcos Alonso spent the first few months of the season out in the cold at Chelsea.

But he’s another who has enjoyed a new lease of life following the departure of Lampard last month.

Alonso has been a player reborn and, in midweek, was excellent as Chelsea caused a major Champions League upset by beating Atletico.

The Spain international was crucial as the Blues won the Premier League title under Antonio Conte three years ago.

And, now he’s back to performing at that same high level, United will have to make sure they prevent him from gunning forward with gusto.

Andreas Christensen

Andreas Christensen was another who stood out in Chelsea’s victory over Atletico.

Once dubbed the natural heir to John Terry, he lived up to that billing by keeping Luis Suarez and Joao Felix at bay.

United are the Premier League’s top scorers this season, finding the net 53 times from their opening 25 matches.

And Solskjaer will need his forwards to give Christensen a torrid day at the office.

Whether that happens, however, remains to be seen with the goals drying up for the likes of Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood this term.

Maguire’s verdict

United captain Harry Maguire has hailed Chelsea for their remarkable form under Tuchel ahead of the match in west London.

“Obviously, Chelsea’s going to be a tough game but we went there last year and won and we’ll be looking to do that again,” he said.

“They’re keeping their position very nicely and build up really well and [are] not conceding many goals, so it’s a good start [for them]. We’re hoping to spoil that.”

He ten added: “They’re a great group of players with tons of talent with and the money they spent in the summer, they’re starting to gel, starting to tick, but we’ve got to look at ourselves, first and foremost.

“We go into the game full of confidence, full of belief. We’ll make sure we play to the ability of what we’re capable of and go and get the three points.”
