Lokomotiv’s loss will come as a blow to Rangnick – who was looking to prove his worth ahead of a potential move to Manchester United.

Rangnick is set to become Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season after agreeing terms over a six-month contract at Old Trafford.

The 63-year-old German coach will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who was sacked after United’s embarrassing defeat to Watford last week.

Rangnick has a good relationship with the Old Trafford hierarchy having previously spoken to the club before they appointed Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

He also interviewed for the Everton job before Carlo Ancelotti took over at Goodison Park in December 2019.

The former Schalke and RB Leipzig boss has maintained links with senior figures at Old Trafford and, in particular, the club’s director of football John Murtough.

However, Rangnick has only won one major trophy as a manager – the German Cup in 2011 with Schalke. As a result, people have questioned his suitability for the job at United.

Nevertheless, Rangnick has been credited with devising the Gegenpress and has proved an inspiration for Premier League managers Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

Therefore, United believe his is the right fit for the job given it would be too hard to prise Mauricio Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain in mid-season.

Lokomotiv chairman Plutnik has all but confirmed Rangnick’s move to Manchester United.

Speaking ahead of their Europa League clash with Lazio on Thursday night he said ‘everything will be fine’ when asked how the club were feeling about Rangnick’s departure.

The Lokomotiv chief said: ‘Things are good. We are now focused on the game. We will think after the match. Everything will be fine.’
