Manchester United may find it difficult to fetch their asking price for Mason Greenwood this summer, as clubs try and take advantage of Sir Jim Ratcliffe during his first transfer window at Old Trafford. Ratcliffe and his INEOS group are expected to have a huge say in United’s transfer activity, with the Greenwood situation one of the first items on their agenda.
It’s approaching one year since Greenwood was shipped out on loan to La Liga side Getafe, having been frozen out of the United set-up following an internal investigation. With less than three months of that loan deal left to run, speculation surrounding the Englishman’s next move has been rife, with some suggestions he could make a return to the Premier League.
But should Greenwood leave Old Trafford on a permanent deal in the summer, it’s claimed the three-time European champions will struggle to command a high price for his signature. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who told the United Stand YouTube channel: “So I think for United, it is quite a good situation, because there are many clubs interested, but the real point is about the fee.
“Obviously United will try to make important money from this deal. These clubs also know that United are prepared to sell Greenwood, so they want to spend less money. This is why I think it’s a normal strategy especially at this point of the year, it’s still early.”
Before later adding: “So I think it’s going to be one for June, not for now, not for March, not for April. The interest is there for sure, from multiple clubs. My feeling remains the same… I see United preparing to cash in on Greenwood, I don’t see him staying at the club.”
Finding a suitable home for Greenwood could prove a difficult task for Ratcliffe and co., given the struggles United had when trying to loan him out earlier in the season. It was reported by The Athletic that European giants such as Borussia Dortmund, Roma and AC Milan all passed up on the chance of signing the forward, while Premier League side Brentford also rejected United’s approach.
Eventually ending up at Getafe as part of a deadline day move, Greenwood has been able to showcase his talents in one of Europe’s most prestigious leagues, featuring 27 times across all competitions for the Spanish side. During that time, Greenwood has notched up eight goals and a further five assists, with the Bradford-born attacker establishing himself as one of Getafe’s best players.
