Jamie Carragher claims Marcus Rashford’s ‘performances don’t warrant him being in Manchester United’s starting XI’ as pressure mounts on Ralf Rangnick to drop out of form frontman

  • Marcus Rashford has been enduring a difficult season at Manchester United
  • The England star struggled again during their 1-1 draw away at Atletico Madrid
  • Jamie Carragher feels he needs to be taken out of the firing line at Old Trafford
  • The Liverpool legend admits United ‘need something better’ than Rashford

Jamie Carragher believes Marcus Rashford should be dropped from Manchester United’s starting XI because his below-par performances this season ‘don’t warrant being in the team’.

Rashford, 24, has struggled for consistency in recent seasons at Old Trafford, but he has remained a first-team regular under both interim boss Ralf Rangnick and predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The England star has been afforded 14 starts in all competitions this term, despite only registering five goals and two assists in 22 overall appearances.

He failed to impress when given the nod in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw away Atletico Madrid, with club legend Paul Scholes criticising him for ‘trying to do something magical’ every time he gets the ball.

And Carragher has also expressed his frustration with Rashford’s form, while urging Rangnick to take him out of United’s starting XI.

‘Marcus Rashford has been in this team since he was a kid. He burst onto the scene and he’s always threatened to go to that next level, when the top players get to, and he’s not there yet,’ the Liverpool legend said on CBS.

‘We’ve got to the stage now where I don’t think he should be in Manchester United’s XI. His performances this season don’t warrant being in the team.

‘More often than not he is in the team. Even when people are fit they find a position for him.

‘He doesn’t suit playing on the right, not at all, so it needs to be on the left or in the centre.

‘But we’re still waiting for Rashford to make that jump to become a United great or a player who can take them to big trophies, and he’s not there yet.

‘At the age he’s at, United need something better than Marcus Rashford right now.’
