A man was found dead in a popular Hoboken park on Thursday morning.
Maxwell Place Park, just across the Hudson River from Chelsea, was closed into the afternoon as authorities investigated, News 12 New Jersey reported.
The man’s identity and his cause of death were not announced by authorities.
“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hoboken Police Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a male found deceased in Maxwell Place Park,” the prosecutor’s office wrote on Twitter. “The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.”
Neighborhood residents were shocked to find the park closed Thursday morning.
“[It’s] surprising to me, especially this part of town,” Rick Raspolich told News 12. “It’s a great place, very nice, quiet.”
Maxwell Place Park was one of the designated locations for watching the Macy’s fireworks show to celebrate July 4, along with neighboring Elysian Park.
Hoboken public safety spokeswoman Marci Shapiro told Patch the park would reopen “as soon as possible.”
